In one bizarre incident, a newly wedded bride allegedly set her house ablaze with her husband locked up inside over a trivial misunderstanding in Katsina state in Nigeria.
An 18-year-old Asiya Lawal, is being held at Katsina prison for allegedly killing her husband. She was ordered to be remanded in prison by a chief magistrate court in Katsina after the police arrested her following a search operation.
It is believed that the couple had a spat with each other in the morning and she in a fit of rage locked him up inside a room and set the house on fire after pouring gasoline all over. The burn injuries were so severe that it killed Iliya Sani, husband of Asiya. One of the neighbors after seeing the flames from the house called the police officials reported the matter to them. Fire officials also arrived within few minute of the incident.
Kabir Mohammed, the police officer who is prosecuting and investigating the matter, told the court that the suspect’s husband died as a result of severe burns sustained during the fire attack.
“He was rushed to Funtua General Hospital before being referred to ABU Teaching Hospital where he died following severe burns,” he added.
The direct suspicion went on the wife as she disappeared the site after setting the house ablaze. Police investigated the matter and after a serious search operation, she was arrested. She later confessed to the crime and told the police that they had a small tiff with each other and she couldn’t handle the pressure of the fight which made her took this extreme step.
The presiding judge, Hadiza Danja, adjourned the matter to 31st of this month and ordered that the suspect wife to be remanded in prison.
Reportedly, she can serve a life sentence if charged.
