Donald Trump breaks press access protocol again by being deceitful about his whereabouts to the journalists. On Tuesday Night, he came out his New york Tower Residence for the first time in past days, moving about the nation’s largest city without a team of journalists on hand to ensure the public has knowledge of his whereabouts.
He spent almost two hours dining with family at the 21 Club, a restaurant a few blocks from his Trump Tower residence. The Journalists Present there were just aware that Trump was leaving home when a large motorcade pulling away from the building was spotted, including an ambulance with lights flashing.
The incident was an actual surprise for the journalist a Trump’s campaign had already called a “lid” —which is a signal to the journalists that he would not be venturing out for the rest of the day. The practice is meant to guarantee that journalists are on hand to witness, on behalf of the public, the activities of the president or president-elect, rather than relying on second-hand accounts of sources.
Hope Hicks, Trump’s spokesperson had issued the lid at around 6:14 p.m. however, to the surprise, just over an hour later, Trump’s motorcade left his residence. His whereabouts became clear only after a fellow diner tweeted a picture of the president-elect arriving at the restaurant.
Hicks said she was unaware that Trump planned to leave his home and didn’t plan to leave the journalists and press in the dark intentionally. She said the Trump team was working toward setting up a protective pool in the near future.
Trump traveled from New York to Washington last week without a pool of journalists, which is where he broke the protocol at first. He’s since spent most of his time inside his New York building, with his transition team offering few details about his schedule and whereabouts.
Trump departed the 21 Club around 9:30 p.m. His daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, got into a vehicle in the motorcade followed by security.
