A Florida mother of two children has allegedly murdered her 7-month-old boy and a 3-year-old girl with bed sheets in Miramar.
40-year-old Sophia Hines of Philadelphia was arrested on Wednesday night by Miramar police and is facing two counts of murder.
Authorities in Broward County said that the murders of the two children took place over the past week, just north of Miami. The Florida mom had been visiting from the Philadelphia area with her children and was staying with them at a family member’s home. It was in this residence that Hines reportedly decided to commit two horrendous murders. It is believed that she killed her both of children by holding a bed sheet over their mouths.
The bodies of St. Leo Hines and Ariel Hines were found Wednesday inside a home in the 6100 block of Southwest 38th Street.
Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said Hines and her children were visiting from Philadelphia.
Till now the mother has not given any reason for committing such a heinous crime and everyone in the family is in the state of shock to comment on the matter. But according to the reports and investigations, prolonged mental illness is seen as the cause for such a drastic step. It seems like the mother was in depression which none of the family members was aware of.
According to the report, Hines called a woman who lives at the home shortly before 4:30 p.m. and told her to “come home now.” When the woman arrived, she saw Hines crying and found the two children lying side by side in a supine position on a bed in the master bedroom.
Emergency services were called just after the incident and Paramedics pronounced the children dead at the scene.
Hines has been being without bond at a Broward County jail and if convicted, she can face the death penalty for the crime she committed.
