A Florida mom, Jamie Gilt had been in news recently for letting her 4 year old son using her gun, and wounding her. This gun-nutter mom, also bragged about her gun sense on her Facebook page, which is deactivated now. Earlier this month, when the child was allowed to use the gun, the most ‘responsible’ act left her with a wounded back, and created a buzz around the world. Again, she is in the news, for the police recommending charging her. But, the charge might piss you off, certainly. According to Putnam County Sheriff’s Capt. Gator DeLoach Gilt would face 180 days in jail, and the State Attorney Office will make a decision if the charges will be filed.
The police feel that Gilt should be charged only with the misdemeanor though her act of letting her son use the gun put the child in mortal danger. What is even more outrageous is the fact that Florida Department of Children and Families have opened a case on the same, but still the mother has the custody of her child. This is incredible.
Gilt is at fault enough to be charged with felony of child with the care. The child neglect is defined in Florida Law as,
“A caregiver’s failure or omission to provide a child with the care, supervision and services necessary to maintain the child’s physical and mental health, including, but not limited to, food, nutrition, clothing, shelter, supervision and medical services that a prudent person would consider essential for the well being of the child.”
What is the question of many is that if this is not the case of failure of supervision, then what is. The child has been let to take a gun, and use it. Fortunately, it is only the unwise mother was injured. There are enough chances that the child could have used it to shoot himself, and ended up in a grave. Unless the mother is given intensive parenting classes, and denied license to own a gun, the custody of the child should not be handed over to her is what many feel.
