Police have arrested a woman after an intensified search operation in Bhadravathi area. The woman is accused of abducting a newborn baby boy from the maternity ward of a government hospital on Wednesday.
When the Infant’s mother Geevitha woke up and found her baby missing, she alerted the hospital staff and husband who was at home. According to police, the CCTV fixed in the hospital was not working properly. The blurred footage shows a woman moving around the hospital, suspiciously. According to a complaint lodged by the baby’s father, Arun, his wife gave birth to a baby boy in the hospital on Tuesday night.The baby was kidnapped in the early hours of Wednesday when the mother and baby were sleeping.
It is believed as per the reports that Saroja, the accused, who belongs to Lingadahalli area near Tarikere was depressed since a long time because of being childless and decided to steal a baby from hospital but fearing arrest, she threw the baby near the bridge and fled the place. The baby died on the spot. Police had found the dead body of the baby the following day.
Shivamogga district health officer S Rajesh who visited the hospital said the matter is grave and serious action will be taken against the authorities whose negligence has lead to this incident and a parent has lost their a day old baby.
Police launched a massive search operation to nab the woman as the CCTV footage in the hospital showed blur images of a woman walking suspiciously throughout the maternity ward. She was arrested on suspect basis but was later confessed to the crime. Saroja ’s family members have been informed about the incident.
Following the incident, the DHO also visited the hospital and suspended five staff who were on duty at the maternity ward on that day.
